What happens?
At the initial family interview, we gather information about the types of challenges the child and other family members are experiencing. The specific reasons for the evaluation, the child’s needs, and the child’s background are all considered in determining the best assessment approach (e.g., a brief screen or a more comprehensive team evaluation).
Families are encouraged to bring school records, counseling reports, and the results of any prior testing to help us gain a comprehensive view. We also ask permission to speak with teachers and adults who may play a significant role in the child’s life.
If psychological and educational testing is indicated, instruments will be selected to address the child’s needs, with sensitivity to cultural issues. A full assessment generally takes 3 to 6 hours and is completed over several meetings. Every effort is made to ensure that the process is enjoyable and rewarding for the child; level of interest, sensitivity to stress, and susceptibility to fatigue are all taken into account when structuring and scheduling sessions.
After the evaluation process is completed, a feedback conference is held with the child and parents to discuss important findings and recommendations. At this time we review options and suggest specific strategies, offering numerous practical tips that we have found to ease family life as well as enhance the educational process. A detailed written report is also provided. All of our work is confidential, and we do not release any information without parents’ written permission. If therapy or counseling is indicated, we provide referrals to other health-care providers, tutors, or agencies.
